Gardiner Yarn Works

Gardiner Yarn Works is the creative outlet for otherwise full-time mommy Chrissy Gardiner. After learning to knit from her grandmother at age 10, Chrissy dabbled in the fiber arts (including knitting, crocheting, cross-stitch and needlepoint) for the past two decades before discovering her local yarn shop and the lovely luxury yarns therein. Knitting became her new obsession after discovering that wool is not always scratchy. You can also find her busily designing for Blue Moon Fiber Arts, The Sweet Sheep, Hip Knits UK and Y2Knit when she's not working on new patterns for her Gardiner Yarn Works line or fetching a sippy cup of milk for an impatient child.

How long have you been dyeing yarn/beading? I am a knitwear designer, and have been doing it for about a year and a half. My first published pattern was the Ziggy scarf in Feb '06 Mag Knits.

What motivates you? It's fun to come up with new designs, especially socks (my favorite thing to design), and it's really great to be able to share the designs with others. There's nothing like seeing a stranger in one of your designs!

What was your favourite product you have ever made? It was a design for the upcoming book Big Girl Knits 2 - I can't tell you about it since the book isn't published yet, but I am so proud of it! It turned out beautifully and was really fun to knit.

Have you ever been a participant in a Secret Pal swap? Yup - I've been in all of them since SP6.

Any advice for the fiber/beading artists? Follow your passion, and treat yourself as a professional right from the start. The great thing about doing a fiber-related business is that you can make it as small or big as you want, and can do it in very small chunks of time. I've got two small children at home, so it's important for me to have something very flexible. I love that I can bring my knitting with me anywhere and work on it a row or two at a time.

Are there any designers, fiber artists or any other artist you consider role models? I took a six-week sweater design class from Leigh Radford right as I was starting out and got tons of invaluable advice - she is such an incredible creative thinker. I am also a total Nancy Bush fanatic and really respect and look up to her as a designer.

Cherry Blossom the Interview

How long have you been dyeing yarn/beading? I've been dyeing for a little over a year, and beading for more than 2 years.

What motivates you? My love of DIY crafts and the desire to produce products that fellow knitters/crocheters/spinners will enjoy. I love experimenting and creating different blends of harmonizing colors, and definitely enjoy seeing them knit up. And my color inspirations often come from things I see in my life, from my view of Central Park to a pint of Cherry Vanilla frozen yogurt!

What was your favourite product you have ever made? For sock yarns, It's hard to say, since I've created so many colorways that I want to keep for myself. However, my favorite handspun product I've made so far is the "Bay Breeze" that is in my shop.

Have you ever been a participant in a Secret Pal swap? No, SP9 is my first, and it's been great so far! I have a wonderful spoiler, and hopefully, my spoilee feels the same about me!

Any advice for the fiber/beading artists? Don't be afraid to experiment and figure out what methods work best for you. Also, the sense of accomplishment and the compliments from happy customers are well worth the hours of obsessing over achieving the perfect products!

Are there any designers, fiber artists or any other artist you consider role models? No one specific, but I am definitely in awe of many other designers and fiber artists out there - too many to name!

"Our yarns are dyed with professional quality acid dyes with an emphasis on beautiful color combinations. Our colorways are created in very limited quantities, many of which are one of a kind creations.

Our RUBY Sock Yarn is our softest line of painted fibers. It is a superwash merino wool sock yarn. This yarn is an excellent choice for the knitter who prefers all natural fibers. Skeins are approximately 4oz/ 550 yards.
Our SAPPHIRE Sock Yarn is a superwash merino wool and nylon blend. This nylon blend sock yarn adds to the durability of socks. Skeins are approximately 4oz / 500 yards.
Our TENDERFOOT yarn is one of our new additions. It is a 3/8 Sport weight superwash merino yarn. It is a "thin" 3-ply sport weight and a wonderfully soft yarn that knits up a bit faster than our other sock yarns. Skeins are approximately 4oz/ 375 yards.
Our TREADSOFT Yarn is our newest line of handpainted fibers. It is a superwash merino wool sock yarn with a tight twist. Skeins are approximately 4oz/490 yards. We primarily create sock yarns, but occasionally offer other weights.
SUPERWASH SPORT- supersoft 4-ply merino. Skeins are approximately 4 oz / 280 yards.
TWISTED- a four ply 100% merino wool yarn which absorbs dye in a unique way. One ply of this yarn is more dye absorbent than the other plies. Even when dyed in a single colour, the yarn takes on different tones.Skeins are approximately 4 oz / 280 yards.
